Square Enix Aims to Streamline Its Portfolio
In a recent financial briefing, Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu outlined his vision to refine the company's game lineup. Kiryu expressed his desire to concentrate on developing a smaller number of high-quality titles, rather than spreading resources too thin. He acknowledged that the current lineup lacks diversity and that the company has been too reliant on specific genres and franchises, such as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. To address this, Kiryu plans to revamp the development process by prioritizing select new projects and focusing on creating games of exceptional quality. By doing so, he hopes to enhance the company's internal development capabilities, increase efficiency, and establish a reputation for consistently producing top-tier games, ultimately leading to improved profitability. When questioned about the challenges in downsizing the lineup, Kiryu attributed it to the company's previous strategy of attempting to produce a wide range of titles in pursuit of hits, resulting in many games falling into a middle ground between blockbuster and indie titles. He aims to create clearer distinctions in the company's portfolio moving forward.
