UK Game Developers Show Cautious Optimism for 2024

A recent survey by TIGA found that 73% of UK game studios are planning to expand in 2024, with only 6% anticipating staff reductions. The trade body's Business Opinion Survey 2023-2024 indicates that UK game businesses are adopting a cautiously optimistic outlook for the upcoming year, with nearly half of respondents expressing hope for their company's future, marking a 40% increase from the previous year. Over 50% of the surveyed studios predict an increase in net profits over the next 12 months, while 46% believe the economic and business climate will be favourable to the video game industry in 2024, down from 66% in 2023. In terms of investment, 44% of respondents view the 2024 outlook as more promising than the previous year, with over a third unchanged and 19% less optimistic. Looking back at 2023, most companies experienced positive growth, with 41% reporting increased net profits and 62% seeing overall workforce expansion. However, UK game businesses faced challenges such as skill shortages and discoverability issues, as well as reduced hiring opportunities, uncertainty surrounding Unity's runtime fees, and pandemic-related debts. The survey was based on a sample of 37 UK game businesses, employing over 2,500 developers, which accounts for approximately 11% of the UK game industry workforce.
