Layoffs Hit 35% of Game Developers in the Past Year, According to GDC Survey

The Game Developers Conference's annual survey, conducted by Informa and its market research firm Omdia, polled over 3,000 game developers in October, revealing the impact of layoffs on the industry. A significant 35% of respondents reported being affected by layoffs in the past year, with 7% having been laid off themselves, 17% seeing colleagues let go, and 11% experiencing layoffs in other departments. QA teams were disproportionately affected, with 22% of QA developers surveyed having been laid off. In contrast, only 2% of business and financial professionals reported being laid off. The survey also found that 56% of respondents were concerned about potential layoffs in the coming year. Additionally, the survey explored other workplace issues, including crunch and unionization, with a slight increase in support for unionization and a decrease in opposition. The use of generative AI tools was also examined, with 49% of developers reporting that they or their colleagues use such tools, and 15% expressing interest in trying them. The survey also polled developers on their use of game engines, with Unity and Unreal Engine being the most popular, and 7% of developers having switched engines in the past year.
