Apple Introduces Direct Payment Links with 27% Commission Fee

Following the outcome of its prolonged legal dispute with Epic Games, Apple has outlined the procedure for direct payments on iOS, which includes a 27% commission on earnings from these methods. According to the updated guidelines, developers must apply for an 'entitlement' and still offer the option to purchase through Apple's billing system, with direct payment links provided as an alternative. The 27% commission applies to all sales made through external links, except for participants in the iOS Small Business Program, who are charged 12%. These changes are limited to the US iOS and iPadOS App Stores, while in other markets, developers are prohibited from using external links or calls to action that direct users to alternative payment methods. To use external payment links, developers must apply for a StoreKit External Link Entitlement, which Apple will review to ensure compliance with the terms and conditions. Approved developers can then add links to their games, allowing players to purchase in-game items directly from the studio. However, developers must provide a monthly transaction report and adhere to specific guidelines, such as directing users to their website without redirects and not mimicking Apple's in-app purchase system. Additionally, Apple will display a pop-up warning users of the risks associated with leaving the Apple ecosystem when they click on external payment links.
