Larian Studios Opts Out of Subscription Services for Its Games

According to Larian Studios' founder and CEO Swen Vincke, the company's games, including Baldur's Gate 3, will not be available on subscription platforms. Vincke expressed his views on social media, responding to Ubisoft's director of subscription Philipe Tremblay, who noted that the adoption of subscription models in the gaming industry has been slower compared to other media. Vincke stated that while he respects the opportunities subscription models offer to some developers, he believes it's essential to preserve the traditional ecosystem where developers can sell their games directly to players. He emphasized that 'content will always be king' and that a developer-to-player approach is crucial for the industry's future. Vincke previously mentioned that Baldur's Gate 3 would not be included in Xbox Game Pass, citing the need for a fair price for the game and the importance of this revenue model for the company's continued game development. The discussion around subscription models has sparked debate in the industry, with Tremblay suggesting that consumers need to become comfortable with not owning their games for the model to succeed.
