Sega America and Europe Appoint Shuji Utsumi as New CEO

Shuji Utsumi has been appointed as the president, COO, and CEO of Sega's American and European operations. This change was announced in a recent investor notice, with Utsumi's previous position as co-COO and representative director being taken over by Yukio Sugino, effective April 1, 2024. Utsumi brings extensive industry experience, having initially joined Sony in 1994 and later becoming a part of Sega in 1996. He played a crucial role in the launch of the PlayStation in North America and the Sega Dreamcast. Following his departure from Sega in 2000, Utsumi held various roles at Disney Interactive, Q Entertainment, Warner Music Japan, and Cybird before rejoining Sega in 2019. Prior to his current appointment, Utsumi served as co-COO, president of consumer games and transmedia, and representative director, starting in April 2023. Additionally, Sega Sammy has announced the retirement of several key executives, including Shigeru Yamashita, Taketo Oshima, and Hideo Yoshizawa. Recently, Sega Europe also announced the return of Jurgen Post as COO of West Studios and regional managing director, while Tim Heaton departed as chief studios officer. These changes are part of Sega's ongoing operational restructuring, primarily in Europe, which has been underway since September last year and has resulted in layoffs at Creative Assembly and the cancellation of Hyenas.
