Discord Announces 17% Workforce Reduction

Discord has initiated a significant restructuring effort, resulting in the elimination of 170 positions, which accounts for 17% of its total workforce. According to an internal memo obtained by The Verge, the layoffs will impact employees across various departments. In a statement to staff, CEO Jason Citron explained that Discord's rapid expansion, with a five-fold increase in personnel since 2020, led to a surge in projects and a subsequent decline in operational efficiency. "Our accelerated growth and rapid hiring have prompted us to reevaluate our focus and streamline our workflow. This decision to downsize our workforce is a strategic move to enhance our organizational agility." Citron also announced that affected employees will be provided with a comprehensive severance package, including five months of pay and continued benefits for the same duration. Discord joins a growing list of companies, including Playtika, Twitch, and Unity, that have implemented layoffs this week.
