Revamped Steam Policy Welcomes AI-Driven Games

Valve Corporation has revamped its Steam review policy to accommodate games that utilize artificial intelligence, stating that it will approve the majority of such titles. However, the company has established new guidelines, including the requirement for developers to disclose their use of AI in game development. Valve categorizes AI content into pre-generated and live-generated types, both of which will undergo review to detect any prohibited or infringing material. For live-generated AI content, developers must demonstrate measures to prevent the creation of illicit content. This AI disclosure will be used for pre-release review and will be displayed on the game's page to inform players about the AI content. Additionally, players can report any in-game AI-generated content that violates the rules. The updated policy is a result of Valve's efforts to better understand the AI landscape and risks, as well as its engagement with game developers and AI tool creators. While the new policy is more open to AI-driven games, it does come with exceptions, such as a ban on live-generated adult content created with AI. Valve acknowledges the time it took to develop this policy and apologizes for any difficulties this may have caused for developers, but emphasizes its commitment to careful decision-making and continuous learning from game submissions and legal developments surrounding AI.
