Unity Undertakes Major Restructuring, Resulting in Significant Job Cuts

In a recent move, Unity has initiated a substantial round of layoffs as part of its ongoing restructuring process, leading to the elimination of approximately 1,800 positions. According to a report by The Verge, the layoffs were officially disclosed in a filing submitted to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. In the filing, Unity attributed the decision to its efforts to "realign and concentrate on its core operations" and "pursue long-term, profitable growth". In a statement, Kelly Ekins, Unity's public relations director, remarked, "Unity has made the challenging decision to reduce its workforce, affecting around 25% of our total staff across all teams." "This decision was not made lightly, and we express our sincerest appreciation to those impacted for their commitment and contributions to the company," This latest round of layoffs follows the dismissal of 265 employees by Unity last November, which was part of its agreement to terminate its partnership with VFX studio Weta. Previously, Unity had announced plans for a "company reset" in its most recent shareholder letter, warning of potential further redundancies.
