Netflix May Introduce In-Game Purchases and Advertising
Netflix is allegedly exploring alternative revenue streams for its gaming segment. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, company executives have been engaged in internal discussions regarding potential methods to boost revenue from the gaming division. Currently, Netflix's games are included in the subscription package at no extra cost. However, sources indicate that executives are considering the introduction of in-game purchases or advertisements within games as a means to generate additional income, particularly for subscribers on the ad-supported tier. GamesIndustry.biz has contacted Netflix for further comment. The company has 90 games in development, following the announcement of a more strategic approach to collaborating with developers in March. A limited beta for its cloud gaming service was launched over the summer, although less than 1% of Netflix's subscribers engage with games on a daily basis.
