UK Sees 2.6% Increase in PC and Console Sales for 2023
The UK gaming industry experienced a modest growth of 2.6% in 2023, with 38 million video games sold, according to the latest GSD figures. EA Sports FC 24 took the top spot as the best-selling video game, although its sales were down 8.4% compared to the previous year's FIFA 23, which benefited from the FIFA World Cup. Warner Bros. had a strong year with Hogwarts Legacy, which became the second-best-selling game and the top-selling physical game. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 came in third, but its sales were nearly 39% lower than the previous year's game. The top three games all had marketing partnerships with PlayStation, with over half of their sales coming from Sony formats. New IP had a relatively weak year, with Starfield being the highest charting new IP at No.31. Disney IP performed well, with Spider-Man 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor making it to the top 10. Nintendo's games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros Wonder, would have likely charted higher if digital data were available. Other notable releases in the top 20 include Assassin's Creed Mirage, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and F1 23. The PS5 saw a significant sales increase of 55.2% over the previous year, making it the biggest year yet for new PlayStation consoles. The Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series S and X, on the other hand, saw sales declines of 16.7% and 14.2%, respectively. Accessories sales dropped 4.5% despite improved console sales.
