New Zealand Upholds 20% Tax Incentive for Game Developers

New Zealand's governing coalition has announced its decision to continue providing a 20% tax rebate to game developers in the country. This move comes after the October 2023 election, which resulted in a three-way coalition government, as reported by PocketGamer.biz. There were concerns about the tax rebate's future due to comments from ACT party leader David Seymour, who referred to it as 'corporate welfare'. However, Judith Collins, the technology minister and a member of the National Party, expressed her support for the rebate, stating that the government is committed to supporting the sector. Collins noted, 'The Finance Minister, the Prime Minister, and I have all expressed our support for this sector. It's a commitment that you have a lot of support at the very top of the Government.' The tax rebate for New Zealand game developers amounts to NZD 40 million annually. In December, it was reported that the New Zealand gaming industry generated NZD 434.4 million ($270.9 million) in the financial year ending March 2023.
