Bossa Studios Reduces Workforce by One Third
UK-based game developer Bossa Studios has undergone significant restructuring, resulting in the loss of approximately one third of its staff, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. A list of 19 affected individuals was shared, primarily consisting of QA and production personnel, as well as non-UK based employees. The studio has confirmed the layoffs, stating that 40 employees will remain on board, with their primary focus being the development of the upcoming game Lost Skies. In a statement, co-founder Henrique Olifiers cited a combination of factors contributing to the decision, including the surge of AAA game releases post-September, increased operational costs, and delayed funding decisions within the industry. Olifiers described the situation as a "perfect storm of events" that led to a "difficult situation" for developers, necessitating the tough decision to downsize the studio. The layoffs were attributed to a unique set of circumstances, which made it necessary for the studio to restructure and concentrate its efforts on Lost Skies, unfortunately resulting in the departure of around one third of the staff, including some long-standing colleagues. The studio is committed to supporting the affected individuals and has expressed appreciation for any assistance the industry can provide in helping them find new opportunities. The past year has been marked by significant layoffs within the gaming industry, with estimates suggesting over 10,000 job losses worldwide. Analysts predict that further redundancies are likely to occur in 2024, as the industry continues to navigate its challenges.
