Teenager Behind GTA 6 Hack Sentenced to Indefinite Hospital Stay

The 18-year-old individual responsible for hacking Grand Theft Auto 6 last year has received an indefinite hospital order as part of their sentence. According to BBC News, the judge deemed the hacker a significant threat to public safety. Following a mental health evaluation, it was determined that the hacker still intended to engage in cybercrime at the earliest opportunity. Rockstar Games estimated the hack resulted in $5 million in damages. The hacker was found guilty of 12 charges, including fraud and blackmail, as reported by Bloomberg. As a member of the Lapsus$ hacking group, the teenager was out on bail for previous attacks on Nvidia and BT/EE when they committed the Rockstar hack. Using an Amazon Firestick, a hotel TV, and a mobile phone, the hacker stole 90 game clips and shared them on a forum, as reported by the BBC. The defense argued that the success of the GTA 6 trailer proved minimal harm to Rockstar, but the judge emphasized the impact of the hack on the game developer, its employees, and other companies. In a separate trial at Southwark Crown Court, a 17-year-old from the same group was also convicted for their role in the Nvidia and BT/EE hack.
