Reversal: PlayStation to Retain Discovery TV Shows
In a surprising turn of events, PlayStation has announced that it will not be removing over 1,300 Discovery TV shows from its platform as previously planned. Initially, the company had stated that these shows would no longer be accessible from December 31, even for users who had already purchased them. However, thanks to an updated licensing agreement with Warner Bros, the owner of the Discovery brand, consumers will now have continued access to their previously purchased content for a minimum of 30 months. According to PlayStation, 'similar to other services, the licensing rights to TV and movie content previously available for purchase on the PlayStation Store are not owned by us.' The company has worked with Warner Bros to update their licensing agreements, thereby ensuring that users can still access their purchased content. The list of affected shows includes popular titles such as MythBusters, Cake Boss, and Deadliest Catch. This development comes after PlayStation ceased selling movies and TV shows from its stores in 2021 and removed purchased content from Studio Canal due to changing licensing agreements, which left many users unable to view their bought content.
