Global PS5 Sales Surpass 50 Million Mark

Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 5 has reached a significant milestone, selling over 50 million units worldwide as of December 9th, 2023. This achievement puts the console merely a week behind the sales pace of its predecessor, the PlayStation 4. In July, when the PS5 hit the 40 million mark, it was lagging two months behind the PS4. The PS5's launch was marred by severe stock shortages due to a global component shortage, resulting in consistent stockouts during its first two years on the market. Following a strong November in Europe, where sales soared 376% compared to the same period in 2022, the console has seen multiple price cuts as Sony aims to ship 25 million PS5 units this fiscal year. Although PS5 sales dipped slightly in the US during November compared to the previous year, this decline is attributed to the resolving of stock issues in the US during November 2022, which led to a significant sales spike at the time. According to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, 'Reaching this sales milestone is a tribute to the dedication of the global PlayStation community and their enthusiasm for the exceptional experiences crafted by the talented developers at PlayStation Studios and our partners.' He added, 'We appreciate all our players who have joined the PS5 community so far and are excited that this holiday season marks the first time since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles, making them accessible to anyone who wants one.'
