Microsoft Eyes Expansion into New Markets with Ad-Backed Game Streaming

Microsoft is poised to enter new markets with a game streaming service supported by advertisements. The remarks were made by Tim Stuart, Xbox's chief financial officer, during the recent Wells Fargo TMT Summit. Stuart highlighted the versatility of the company's Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which allows users to stream hundreds of games to any device with a web browser. For regions such as Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, where console gaming is not the primary focus, Stuart suggested an alternative model: watching a short ad in exchange for a couple of hours of game streaming. When questioned about the feasibility of providing such services, Stuart pointed to the capabilities of Xbox Cloud Gaming and the expanding 5G internet infrastructure in these regions. This development follows a survey conducted last year, in which Microsoft explored interest in an ad-supported Xbox Game Pass subscription model.
