Sony May Acquire Full Control of Bungie if Financial Goals Are Not Met

Reports suggest that Sony will assume complete ownership of Bungie, the developer behind Destiny, if the studio fails to achieve its financial objectives set after its acquisition last year. According to a detailed report, Bungie currently operates as an independent subsidiary within Sony, with a board of directors comprising executives from both companies. However, sources indicate that if Bungie does not meet its financial targets, Sony can dissolve the board and take full control. The delayed release of Destiny 2: The Final Shape and ongoing investment in Marathon have raised concerns among staff that the studio may struggle to meet its financial goals, potentially leading to a loss of independence. Recent layoffs, which affected around 100 employees, have also impacted morale, with staff citing a 'soul-crushing mood' within the company. Further layoffs are expected if The Final Shape underperforms. The report also mentions Bungie's shift towards outsourcing certain disciplines, such as QA.
