EA Releases Open-Source Technology for Analyzing Photosensitivity

Electronic Arts has made its innovative photosensitivity analysis technology, known as IRIS, available as an open-source resource. This tool provides developers with the capability to assess their content for potential triggers such as flashing lights or rapidly changing patterns, with the goal of integrating it into the development process from the outset. IRIS has already been successfully tested on several high-profile titles, including Madden NFL 24, EA Sports FC 24, and EA Sports WRC. According to estimates from the UK's Epilepsy Society and the US Epilepsy Foundation, approximately 5% of the global epilepsy population, which numbers around 50 million, exhibit photosensitivity. Kerry Hopkins, EA's senior vice president of global affairs, stated, "By open-sourcing IRIS and making additional patented technologies available, we aim to enhance the gaming experience for players with various disabilities, including motor, cognitive, and visual impairments." Furthermore, EA is developing royalty-free technologies based on four of its patents, building on its 2021 Accessibility First Patent Pledge, which seeks to cater to the diverse needs of the gaming community.
