Introducing a New Initiative to Empower Underrepresented Mobile Game Developers

Games for Change has launched the Diverse Voices, New Stories Challenge, a joint effort with HP and Google Play aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion in the mobile gaming sector. The program seeks to provide a platform for creators from underrepresented communities to showcase their work and increase their visibility within the industry. Eligible game developers worldwide can submit their Android mobile games, either in beta or fully released, until February 21, 2024, including titles scheduled for release in 2024. A panel of industry experts will assess the entries through a rigorous three-stage evaluation process, considering factors such as impact, originality, gameplay, and overall concept. The selected winner will receive a $10,000 grant from HP, gaming equipment from HyperX, mentorship opportunities, and marketing support, as well as promotional assistance to launch their game on the Google Play store. The winning game will also be featured at the annual Games for Change Festival in New York City, summer 2024. Additionally, Games for Change will offer career advancement opportunities for marginalized creators at the Games for Change Africa Festival. The event will also include a Game Design Sprint, where developers can pitch their game concepts to a panel of industry professionals and subsequently create playable mobile games for submission to the Diverse Voices, New Stories Challenge. "Despite the growing diversity in the gaming industry, many voices and stories remain untold and underrepresented," noted Susanna Pollack, president of Games for Change. "We are thrilled to partner with Google Play and HP to provide marginalized creators with greater access to funding, resources, and a more inclusive gaming environment."
