UK Video Game Technology Generated £1.3 Billion for Non-Gaming Sectors in 2021
According to a recent study by FTI Consulting and UKIE, the value of video game technology utilized by non-gaming industries in the UK reached £1.3 billion in 2021. The report highlights the 'spillover' effect of gaming tech, encompassing game engines, virtual reality, and 3D rendering software, which has a value comparable to the UK's timber, forestry, aluminum production, and cycling sectors combined. This technology also supported approximately 9,900 jobs within the country. Leading sectors adopting gaming resources included information technology, energy extraction, and business services. Although the healthcare sector saw limited impact from gaming tools, it is expected to be among the top three industries to adopt virtual reality by 2025, utilizing game engines to enhance patient care. UKIE co-CEO Dan Wood noted, 'Video game technology is a key driver of innovation, product design, and consumer experience across various sectors.' The report underscores the video games industry's significant contribution to the UK economy, providing substantial evidence of its value.
