GameMaker Introduces Expanded Free Services for Non-Commercial Projects
GameMaker has introduced a new policy making its services free for all non-commercial projects across non-console platforms. Additionally, the company is shifting towards a one-time payment structure for commercial licenses of its 2D game engine, effectively replacing the existing subscription-based model for creators and indie developers. This move is attributed to the company's desire to express gratitude to its growing user base, which has expanded three times in size. According to Russell Kay, the head of GameMaker, the decision was influenced by observing other platforms' pricing strategies and choosing to take an opposite, more developer-friendly approach. Kay emphasized, "Our success is directly tied to the number of game developers we support." The announcement does not affect console developers, and the enterprise subscription model will remain unchanged.
