Epic Games' CEO Reveals Willingness to Sue Sony Over Cross-Play

The ongoing antitrust trial between Epic Games and Google has brought to light the company's past efforts to enable cross-play on PlayStation. Epic's CEO, Tim Sweeney, disclosed that the company was prepared to take legal action against Sony if necessary. This revelation came to light during Sweeney's testimony, where he discussed a 2018 email sent to Phil Rosenberg, then senior vice president at PlayStation. In the email, Sweeney expressed Epic's intention to enable full interoperability between platforms in Fortnite, stating that the company was 'prepared to pursue this course with all available resources, wherever it leads us, and for however long.' Although Sony initially resisted the idea, they eventually relented in September 2018. The trial also touched on the topic of shareholders, with Sweeney confirming that he is the controlling shareholder of Epic Games. Additionally, the court heard about Google's 'Project Elektra,' which involved a potential investment in or acquisition of Epic Games. Emails presented in court revealed Google's strategic rationale for the investment, including the potential for Fortnite to drive business across YouTube, Google Cloud Platform, and other initiatives.
