Unity 6 Set to Launch in 2024 with Enhanced AI Capabilities and Multiplayer Features
Unity has reinstated its classic versioning system, rebranding Unity 2023 LTS as Unity 6 in anticipation of its release in the coming year. The company had previously shifted away from this system in 2016, adopting a yearly update cycle with more gradual improvements. The last release under the old system was Unity 5.6, after which the product was referred to by year, starting with Unity 2017. However, with the launch of Unity 6 in 2024, this approach will change. The announcement was made at the Unite event, where the company outlined that the next major engine release will boast performance enhancements, expedited multiplayer game development, and AI tools like Sentis. This tool allows developers to seamlessly integrate AI models into games across any device. Furthermore, Unity 6 will build upon the Muse suite of AI tools and services. In a conversation with Marc Whitten, we discussed Unity's goal of providing 'responsibly sourced' AI tools moving forward. The upcoming Unity version will also introduce a new WebGPU graphics backend, enabling games to run universally across the internet, whether in a browser or as native apps. A demonstration of some of Unity 6's features can be seen in the Fantasy Kingdom demo. Additionally, the company unveiled Unity Cloud, a suite of interconnected services designed to facilitate more effective collaboration among developers, regardless of their location.
