Gaming Industry Sees $6 Billion in Mergers and Acquisitions During Q3

According to a recent report by Digital Development Management, the gaming sector witnessed a significant surge in M&A activity, reaching $6 billion in Q3 across 30 deals. In comparison, the same period last year saw a total of $108 million in acquisitions through 33 transactions. The substantial increase in Q3 2023 can be attributed to major deals, including Savvy Games Group's $4.9 billion acquisition of Scopely and Sega's $775 million purchase of Rovio, the developer behind Angry Birds. Investment activity also experienced a 36% year-over-year growth, totaling $965 million across 136 transactions. Early-stage investments accounted for $448 million across 89 deals, while mid and late-stage investments combined for $273 million through eight transactions. The blockchain gaming sector saw 34 transactions, generating $348 million, a 39% increase from the previous year. The report highlighted that mobile gaming garnered 29% of the total investment value, followed by console and PC at 27%, and tech/other at 26%. Looking ahead to Q4, the closure of Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard is expected to make 2023 the largest year for M&A activity, with DDM noting that this single transaction exceeds the combined M&A value of the last two years.
