UKIE has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to unveil the Go‑To‑Market Academy, a newly created business‑focused programme aimed at bolstering the capabilities of independent game studios based in the United Kingdom. This collaborative effort recognises that many promising indie projects struggle not from a lack of creative vision, but from insufficient guidance on how to reach and retain an audience in an increasingly crowded market. By providing a structured learning environment, the Academy seeks to fill that gap and give early‑stage developers the strategic tools they need to launch their games successfully.

The Academy’s core mission is to equip fledgling studios with a comprehensive understanding of go‑to‑market planning, community building, and brand development. Participants will gain hands‑on experience in constructing marketing roadmaps, designing effective campaign tactics, and leveraging Discord’s robust platform for community engagement. The curriculum is divided into six distinct online modules, each targeting a critical component of the commercial launch process.

The first module introduces diagnostic techniques and data‑driven insights that help studios assess their current position and identify growth opportunities. Subsequent sessions dive deeper into crafting a coherent marketing strategy, executing multi‑channel campaigns, and translating those efforts into measurable results.

A standout feature of the programme is its emphasis on Discord as a central hub for community interaction. In today’s gaming ecosystem, Discord has become the de‑facto gathering place for players, influencers, and developers alike. The Academy will teach studios how to set up and manage Discord servers, foster authentic conversations, host live events, and utilise bots and analytics to keep the community vibrant and engaged. By mastering these skills, indie teams can cultivate a loyal fan base that not only supports launch day sales but also provides valuable feedback for post‑release updates and future projects.

Brand identity is another pillar of the Academy. Studios will explore techniques for creating a compelling visual and narrative brand that resonates with their target audience. Guest speakers from the industry—including seasoned marketers, successful indie founders, and community managers—will share real‑world case studies and actionable advice. These experts will also participate in Q&A sessions, offering personalised insights that address the unique challenges faced by each participating studio.

The Academy is intentionally selective, opening its doors to just ten to twelve studios per cohort. This limited intake ensures that each team receives focused attention and ample opportunity to collaborate with peers. The programme kicks off with an in‑person gathering at EGX during MCM Comic Con in London, scheduled for next month. This initial meeting allows participants to network, meet the mentors, and set the stage for the collaborative learning journey ahead.

Following the launch event, the curriculum moves online, with weekly sessions running throughout November and early December. These virtual classes combine lectures, interactive workshops, and group projects, culminating in a final in‑person showcase. During the concluding event, each studio will present a fully developed go‑to‑market plan that they have refined throughout the Academy. The presentations will be framed around a shared case study provided at the start of the programme, enabling a direct comparison of how different teams approach the same market challenge.

This final showcase not only offers valuable feedback from industry veterans but also serves as a platform for studios to attract potential investors, publishers, and media attention. Applications for the inaugural cohort are now open, with a deadline of September 30, 2026. Interested developers can submit their proposals through the provided link, outlining their game concepts, current development stage, and what they hope to achieve through the Academy. UKIE encourages studios at various points in their development cycle to apply, as the curriculum is designed to be adaptable to both pre‑launch and post‑launch scenarios.

"Go‑to‑market planning is where a lot of promising games fall down, not because studios lack good ideas, but because they haven't had the time or support to build the audience and community that gives those ideas a chance to flourish," explained Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE. "The Go‑To‑Market Academy gives indie studios the space to work through that properly, with direct input from Discord on a platform that’s become central to how games communities actually form and grow." Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for EMEA, echoed this sentiment: "The UK's indie games scene is full of talent and opportunity, and we're delighted to partner with UKIE to help it thrive.

We're excited to help this group of UK developers learn how to make the most of Discord to connect with our highly engaged gaming audience, build communities and grow their games." By combining the expertise of UKIE, the community‑centric capabilities of Discord, and the practical insights from GameFlex, the Go‑To‑Market Academy aims to become a cornerstone resource for the next generation of British indie games. The programme not only promises to sharpen marketing acumen but also to foster a supportive network of creators who can share experiences, collaborate on future projects, and collectively elevate the UK indie landscape on the global stage.
