Meta Partners with Tencent for Exclusive VR Headset Sales in China

Meta has entered into an exclusive agreement with Tencent, enabling the Chinese conglomerate to become the sole distributor of Meta's VR headsets in China. According to The Wall Street Journal, this partnership will facilitate Meta's re-entry into the Chinese market, 14 years after it was previously excluded. The arrangement, scheduled to take effect in late 2024, is subject to modification. Under the terms of the deal, Tencent will retain a larger share of revenue from content and services, while Meta will receive a greater proportion of device sales proceeds. The headsets will feature games and applications developed by Tencent. Notably, China's VR market is still in its infancy, and Tencent had considered dismantling its extended-reality technology team due to reduced investment earlier this year. However, sources close to The Wall Street Journal indicate that Tencent has reinstated its VR team as the deal with Meta was being finalized.
