UKIE, the United Kingdom’s leading trade association for the video games sector, has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to roll out a new educational venture called the Go‑To‑Market Academy. This business‑focused programme is specifically tailored for independent studios operating out of the UK, particularly those that are in the early stages of development and are looking to sharpen their commercial acumen. The core purpose of the Academy is to equip fledgling developers with a practical toolkit for constructing robust go‑to‑market (GTM) strategies and for nurturing sustainable, engaged audiences.

While many indie teams possess creative vision and technical skill, they often lack the structured guidance needed to translate a polished game into a thriving community and a profitable launch. The Academy seeks to bridge that gap by delivering a blend of theoretical insight, hands‑on exercises, and real‑world case studies.

The curriculum is divided into six comprehensive online modules. Each module tackles a distinct facet of the GTM process: 1.

**Diagnostics & Insight Gathering** – Participants learn how to assess their game’s market fit, identify target demographics, and analyse competitor landscapes. This foundational step ensures that subsequent strategies are data‑driven.

2. **Marketing Strategy Development** – Studios are guided through the creation of a coherent marketing plan, covering brand positioning, messaging, and channel selection. 3. **Campaign Execution & Measurement** – The focus shifts to the practical rollout of marketing campaigns, with an emphasis on key performance indicators, budgeting, and iterative optimisation.

4. **Leveraging Discord for Community Building** – Given Discord’s status as the premier hub for gaming conversations, this module dives deep into setting up servers, moderating discussions, organising events, and using bots to enhance player interaction.

5. **Studio Branding & Visual Identity** – Participants explore how to craft a memorable visual and tonal brand that resonates with their audience across social media, storefronts, and press kits. 6. **Guest Speaker Sessions** – Industry veterans, including successful indie founders, marketing specialists, and community managers, share their experiences and answer questions in live Q&A formats.

The Academy is deliberately limited to a small cohort of ten to twelve studios, a design choice that fosters intimate mentorship and peer learning. The programme kicks off with an in‑person gathering at EGX, held within the larger MCM Comic Con venue in London next month.

This opening event provides a networking opportunity, allowing participants to meet UKIE representatives, Discord staff, and fellow developers face‑to‑face. Following the launch, the bulk of the instruction will be delivered through virtual sessions scheduled throughout November and early December. These online meetings are structured to be interactive, encouraging participants to work on a shared case study that evolves over the course of the Academy. By the time the curriculum concludes, each studio will have produced a fully fleshed‑out go‑to‑market plan, ready to be executed upon the game’s release.

A second in‑person event will cap the programme, during which each studio presents its GTM plan to a panel of judges and peers. This final showcase not only provides valuable feedback but also offers exposure to potential investors, publishers, and media outlets who may be attending the event.

Applications are now open, with a deadline of 30 September 2026. Interested studios can submit their proposals via the provided link.

The selection process will prioritize teams that demonstrate clear ambition, a viable prototype or early‑access title, and a genuine desire to grow their community using modern tools. "Go‑to‑market planning is where many promising games stumble," explained Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE.

"It’s not a lack of great ideas that holds them back, but the absence of time, expertise, and support to build the audience and community that can bring those ideas to life. The Go‑To‑Market Academy gives indie studios the dedicated space to work through these challenges, with direct input from Discord on a platform that has become central to how gaming communities form and evolve." Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for EMEA, added his perspective: "The UK's indie games scene is brimming with talent and opportunity, and we’re thrilled to partner with UKIE to help it flourish. We look forward to teaching this group of UK developers how to harness Discord’s powerful features to connect with our highly engaged gaming audience, foster vibrant communities, and ultimately grow their games." By combining strategic marketing instruction with hands‑on community‑building techniques, the Go‑To‑Market Academy aims to empower indie developers to launch their titles with confidence, reach the right players, and sustain long‑term success in an increasingly competitive market. Studios that complete the programme will leave with a clear roadmap, a stronger brand identity, and a deeper understanding of how to leverage Discord as a cornerstone of their community strategy.
