Digital Extremes Hit by Layoffs and Closure of Publishing Unit
Developer of Warframe, Digital Extremes, has undergone a significant restructuring, resulting in an undisclosed number of layoffs and the dissolution of its publishing arm. In a statement to Eurogamer, the company confirmed the cessation of its external projects division, which will no longer publish Airship Syndicate's free-to-play game Wayfinder. The decision has led to the departure of several valued team members, with the company collaborating with Airship Syndicate to transfer full control of Wayfinder over the coming months. According to Ron Davey, former art director, approximately 30 staff members were let go, comprising the entire external development team. Although Digital Extremes has not publicly disclosed the exact number of affected employees, the company has been contacted for further clarification. Airship Syndicate has expressed gratitude towards Digital Extremes for supporting the initial development of Wayfinder and has confirmed that it will continue to develop the game, with full ownership of the IP. The news follows the recent departure of CEO James Schmalz, who was succeeded by former creative director Steve Sinclair, who will oversee the development of the studio's upcoming game, Soulframe. In a subsequent update, Digital Extremes confirmed on LinkedIn that 30 employees were indeed affected by the layoffs.
