Sega Boosts Forecasts Following a Strong First Half

Sega Sammy has announced a robust first half of its financial year, primarily driven by its pachinko and pachislot operations. For the six months ending September 30, 2023, net sales increased by 47.3% year-over-year to ¥221.2 billion ($1.5 billion), while operating income soared by 313.4% to ¥39.6 billion ($262.5 million). Despite experiencing weaker-than-expected sales from some new game releases and losses due to ongoing structural reform efforts, the company has raised its forecasts for the current fiscal year. The revised projections anticipate net sales of ¥474 billion ($3.1 billion), operating income of ¥60 billion ($397.7 million), and ¥63 billion ($417.6 million) in net income. Key highlights include: net sales of ¥221.2 billion ($1.5 billion), representing a 47.3% year-over-year increase; operating income of ¥39.6 billion ($262.5 million), up 313.4%; and ordinary income of ¥23.1 billion ($153.1 million), marking a 242% increase. The Entertainment Contents segment reported net sales of ¥121 billion ($802 million), a 3.8% increase, with operating income at ¥7.4 billion ($49 million), down 46.4%. The Consumer division, encompassing video games, saw sales rise 3.9% to ¥77.9 billion ($516.3 million), while operating income decreased 52.8% to ¥5 billion ($33.1 million). During the first half, Sega released several titles, including Samba de Amigo: Party Central, Sonic Origins Plus, and Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection. Although the company described sales of new titles as 'weak', with some performing below expectations, it remains committed to its structural reform, which involves reviewing its title portfolio and reducing fixed expenses, primarily affecting European operations. The integration of Rovio, now a wholly-owned subsidiary, has also been incorporated into Sega's financial results since September. The pachislot and pachinko machines business demonstrated strong performance, with net sales increasing 240% to ¥93.4 billion ($616.4 million).
