Xbox Takes Stronger Stance Against Toxicity with 19.5 Million Enforcement Actions in H1 2023

Microsoft's latest Xbox Transparency Report reveals significant strides in protecting players from toxic behavior and harassment. For the first half of 2023, Xbox enforcement actions surged to 19.6 million, nearly doubling the 10.2 million actions taken in the first half of 2022. Of these, 17.1 million were proactive measures, including 84,000 actions against harassment and bullying, while 2.5 million were reactive, accounting for 13% of the total. During this period, players submitted 27.3 million reports, with half related to communication issues such as platform messages and activity feed comments. Reports concerning conduct totaled 10.5 million, or 39%, and 3.1 million, or 11%, pertained to user-generated content. Microsoft's acquisition of Two Hat in 2021 has been instrumental in enhancing Xbox's safety systems, particularly with the AI-driven content moderation platform Community Sift. Additionally, a model that scans user-generated imagery has blocked over 4.7 million pieces of inappropriate content. There were also 280,000 appeals against account suspensions, with only 4% being successful. The introduction of the Enforcement Strike System in August aims to streamline community standards, with its impact to be assessed in the next report. Data from the Digital Safety Content report showed a 39.5% increase in referrals to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, totaling 766, and a 63.4% increase in referrals to the Crisis Text Line, reaching 2,225.
