UKIE has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to roll out a new venture known as the Go To Market Academy, a specialised business‑focused programme designed to bolster the capabilities of independent game studios operating out of the United Kingdom. This collaboration brings together the industry‑wide advocacy of UKIE, the community‑building power of Discord, and the expertise of GameFlex to create a comprehensive learning environment for early‑stage developers who are eager to transform promising concepts into commercially viable titles. At its core, the Academy is intended to fill a critical gap that many fledgling studios encounter: the lack of a clear, actionable go‑to‑market plan. While creative talent and innovative gameplay ideas are abundant in the UK indie scene, translating those ideas into a sustainable audience often proves challenging.

The Academy addresses this shortfall by delivering a structured curriculum that covers everything from market diagnostics to brand positioning, ensuring that participating studios leave the programme with a concrete roadmap for launching and growing their games. The curriculum is divided into six distinct online modules, each concentrating on a pivotal aspect of market preparation.

The first module introduces diagnostic tools and insight‑gathering techniques that help studios understand their target demographics, competitive landscape, and potential revenue streams. The second module moves into the development of a comprehensive marketing strategy, guiding participants through the creation of messaging frameworks, channel selection, and budget allocation. In the third module, the focus shifts to campaign execution, where studios learn how to design, launch, and optimise promotional activities across both paid and organic channels.

A unique component of the Academy is its dedicated module on leveraging Discord for community engagement. Discord has become the de‑facto hub for gamer interaction, and this module teaches studios how to set up servers, foster meaningful conversations, host live events, and use Discord’s suite of bots and analytics to deepen player relationships.

The fifth module explores studio branding, covering visual identity, tone of voice, and the storytelling techniques that help a game stand out in a crowded marketplace. Finally, the sixth module brings everything together in a capstone project, where each studio applies the knowledge gained to a shared case study that mirrors real‑world challenges. Industry veterans and guest speakers are woven throughout the programme, providing participants with insights drawn from successful launches, community management best practices, and emerging trends in the gaming sector. These experts not only deliver lectures but also engage in Q&A sessions, mentorship, and feedback loops that personalize the learning experience.

The Academy will admit a tightly curated cohort of ten to twelve studios, ensuring that each team receives ample attention and resources. The inaugural cohort will kick off with an in‑person gathering at EGX, which takes place within the larger MCM Comic Con event in London next month. This opening session will allow participants to meet one another, network with industry leaders, and set expectations for the weeks ahead. Following the launch, the programme will transition to a series of virtual workshops and webinars scheduled throughout November and early December, offering flexibility while maintaining a steady rhythm of instruction and interaction.

The final phase of the Academy culminates in another live event where each studio presents the go‑to‑market plan they have crafted over the course of the programme. These presentations will be evaluated by a panel of judges comprising UKIE executives, Discord representatives, and seasoned indie developers, providing valuable feedback and potential exposure to investors or publishing partners. Studios interested in joining the Academy can submit their applications via the provided link, with the deadline set for 30 September 2026. The selection process will prioritize studios that demonstrate a clear vision, a prototype or early build, and a commitment to leveraging community‑centric approaches.

"Go‑to‑market planning is where many promising games stumble, not because the ideas lack merit, but because studios often lack the time, resources, or guidance to build the audience and community needed for those ideas to flourish," explained Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE. "The Go To Market Academy offers indie developers a dedicated space to work through these challenges methodically, with direct input from Discord on a platform that has become central to how gaming communities form and evolve." Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for EMEA, added, "The UK's indie games ecosystem is brimming with talent and opportunity, and we are thrilled to partner with UKIE to help it thrive. We look forward to empowering this group of UK developers to harness Discord’s capabilities, connect with our highly engaged gaming audience, build vibrant communities, and ultimately grow their games." By combining strategic education, practical tools, and the networking power of both UKIE and Discord, the Go To Market Academy aspires to become a cornerstone of support for the next generation of British indie games, turning creative concepts into successful, community‑backed experiences.
