Mass Resignation at The Escapist Following Editor-in-Chief's Termination

A wave of resignations has swept through The Escapist after the sudden termination of its editor-in-chief, Nick Calandra. The move was reportedly made by the Gamurs Group, which acquired the publication last year. Calandra took to social media to announce his departure, stating that he was let go for not meeting goals that were never clearly defined. He also expressed his concern that the company lacked understanding of the audience and the team that built it. The entire video team, including renowned video review series creator Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw, has also stepped down in response. Other contributors, such as Amy Campbell and Darren Mooney, have followed suit. In an update, Calandra revealed that the team was given unrealistic targets with insufficient time to achieve them. He emphasized that the team's focus on direct funding through premium memberships and livestreams, rather than relying on advertisement revenue, was a more sustainable approach but not fast enough for the Gamurs Group. Calandra, along with former colleagues, is set to launch a new independent outlet called Second Wind.
