Minecraft Users Face Highest Risk of Desktop Cyber Attacks, Report Finds

A recent study by cybersecurity experts Kaspersky reveals that Minecraft players are the primary targets of gaming-related cyber threats on desktops. The findings, based on data collected between July 1, 2022, and July 1, 2023, show that out of 4.1 million detected game-related desktop infection attempts, 130,619 Minecraft users were impacted. This represents a significant 70% of game security risks, with Roblox and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive trailing behind at 20% and 5%, respectively. PUBG accounted for 3% of the threats. On the mobile front, Kaspersky detected 80,128 affected Minecraft players, making up 90% of reported mobile gaming security threats. The report highlights the methods used by attackers, including fake game distribution pages, false free giveaways, and illegitimate in-game currency offers. To protect the predominantly young Minecraft player base, the report advises guardians to closely monitor their children's online activities, discuss potential security threats, and caution against phishing attempts, emphasizing the importance of downloading games only from official stores.
