New Guidelines Released to Help Gaming Industry Minimize Carbon Footprint
The Playing for the Planet Alliance has unveiled a comprehensive report aimed at reducing carbon emissions within the gaming sector. Conducted by the Carbon Trust, a leading climate consultancy firm, the study surveyed ten gaming companies to gather insights into their emission reduction strategies. With support from UKIE, a trade body, the project outlines a framework for the industry to follow. Key recommendations include measuring and reporting emissions, setting climate targets in line with the 1.5°C goal, and encouraging player involvement in carbon reduction efforts. Additionally, the report suggests that gaming studios join climate action networks to leverage collective knowledge and expertise. According to Matt Anderson of the Carbon Trust, the unique blend of technology, art, and interactivity in video games presents a complex challenge for applying carbon accounting frameworks. The study found that the majority of a gaming company's carbon emissions stem from purchased items, services, and energy consumption. To improve emission reporting, the industry is advised to adopt consistent reporting practices, provide more detailed sector-specific results, and ensure transparency in methodologies and findings. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, studios are increasingly joining forces to track and reduce their environmental impact. Recent examples include Die Gute Fabrik and AfterClimate, which have published reports on their carbon footprint and are working towards more sustainable practices.
