Paradox Interactive and Harebrained Schemes Announce Forthcoming Separation

In a strategic move, Paradox Interactive and Harebrained Schemes have decided to go their separate ways, effective January 1, 2024. This decision aligns with the companies' individual priorities and goals. The split occurs over five years after Harebrained Schemes, the developer behind BattleTech, was acquired for $7.5 million. Paradox Interactive will retain ownership of The Lamplighters League and other titles developed by Harebrained Schemes. Meanwhile, Harebrained Schemes will continue to provide support for The Lamplighters League until the end of the year while exploring funding opportunities and partnerships as an independent studio. According to Paradox COO Charlotta Nilsson, discussions about the future of Harebrained Schemes after The Lamplighters League's release led to the conclusion that a separation would be the most beneficial path forward. The announcement comes on the heels of Paradox writing down The Lamplighters League's development costs, resulting in projected Q4 losses of $22.8 million, and earlier layoffs at Harebrained Schemes.
