ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first‑ever PAX Unplugged event in Houston, slated for the summer of 2027. This announcement marks a significant milestone for the PAX brand, which has traditionally focused on digital gaming festivals, by expanding its footprint into the analog‑gaming sphere in a major southern market. The concept of PAX Unplugged originated back in 2017 when the inaugural edition took place in Pennsylvania. That early gathering proved that tabletop and board‑game enthusiasts could thrive under the PAX umbrella, creating a vibrant community space separate from the video‑game‑centric shows.
Since then, the tabletop segment has continued its upward trajectory, with more designers, publishers, and hobbyists entering the market each year. "The tabletop industry continues to grow, and tabletop gaming really flourishes among the PAX community," explains Sean Gonzalez, the event manager for PAX, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. When the team began evaluating the possibility of adding another Unplugged location, they examined a range of potential host cities. Their criteria included the strength of local exhibitor interest, the presence of a supportive gaming community, and the logistical capacity of the venue and surrounding infrastructure.
"We were always partial to returning to the South," Gonzalez notes, recalling earlier discussions about bringing a PAX experience back to fans who missed the previous PAX South iteration. After a thorough comparison, Houston emerged as the clear front‑runner. The city not only offers a modern convention center and ample hotel capacity, but also boasts a thriving board‑game scene, a growing number of hobby shops, and a diverse population eager for new cultural events.
PAX South, which had been a staple for Texas gamers since its debut in 2015, was placed on indefinite hold in 2021 after the pandemic disrupted live events. The final PAX South gathering took place in San Antonio in January 2020, leaving a noticeable gap in the regional schedule for large‑scale gaming conventions.
By launching PAX Unplugged Houston, the organizers aim to fill that void and give southern fans a reason to travel back to a PAX‑hosted experience. The venue for the 2027 edition will be the George R.
Brown Convention Center, a facility well known for accommodating major trade shows, concerts, and sporting events. The three‑day festival will run from Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27. Attendees can expect a sprawling expo floor dedicated to analog gaming, where publishers will showcase the latest board games, card games, role‑playing titles, and miniature wargames.
In addition to the vendor booths, the schedule will feature a robust lineup of panels covering topics such as game design theory, inclusive gaming practices, and the future of tabletop storytelling. Competitive play will also have a prominent place on the agenda. Organized tournaments for popular titles—ranging from legacy board games to strategic card games—will provide both casual participants and seasoned competitors with opportunities to test their skills and win prizes.
Community meet‑ups, including hobbyist clubs, local game‑store gatherings, and fan‑run events, will be scattered throughout the convention, fostering a sense of camaraderie and encouraging networking among attendees. Regarding the broader strategy for PAX’s growth, Gonzalez emphasizes that the primary goal remains delivering an exceptional experience for both exhibitors and visitors at existing events. "We are now launching PAXU Houston and giving it the attention it deserves, before we even consider expanding any further," he says. This measured approach reflects a commitment to quality over quantity, ensuring that each new show receives the resources and planning needed to succeed.
Nevertheless, the organization is not standing still. Gonzalez mentions ongoing enhancements across the PAX portfolio, such as the introduction of new feature zones, additional stages, and diversified programming tracks at both the East and West coast shows. These innovations aim to keep the festivals fresh, attract a broader audience, and provide more opportunities for game creators to showcase their work.
"We've always been grateful for the industry names and our dedicated community that continues to support PAX. Even when the gaming industry faces challenges, our community continues to be as passionate as ever," he adds.
Ticket sales for PAX Unplugged Houston are expected to open later in the year, accompanied by a call for media and content‑creator applications. Organizers anticipate strong demand, given the scarcity of large‑scale tabletop conventions in the region and the lingering enthusiasm of fans who have been waiting since the cancellation of PAX South.
By combining a well‑curated expo floor, insightful panels, competitive tournaments, and vibrant community gatherings, PAX Unplugged Houston aims to set a new standard for analog gaming festivals and re‑establish a beloved gathering point for gamers across the southern United States.
