Leading Tech and Gaming Firms Show Significant Carbon Footprint Reductions
A recent report by AfterClimate reveals that several major players in the tech and gaming sectors, including Tencent, Apple, Nintendo, and Ubisoft, have successfully decreased their carbon emissions between 2021 and 2022. Conversely, companies like Sega, NetEase, and Unity experienced an increase in their emissions over the same period. The report highlights Tencent as the leader in emissions reduction, with a 13.73% decrease, followed by Apple at 11%, Nintendo at 2.95%, and Ubisoft at 0.14%. However, Unity saw the most significant rise in emissions at 32.4%, with Google, Sony, and Microsoft also experiencing notable increases. The collective carbon footprint of 34 analyzed companies, including major tech and gaming firms, totals over 81 million tonnes of CO2 emissions for 2022. Despite the progress made, the gaming industry's overall environmental impact is substantial, with AfterClimate noting that even without the emissions of big tech companies, the remaining businesses still account for over seven million tonnes of CO2 emissions, emphasizing the need for continued focus on reducing the industry's carbon footprint.
