Revamped PlayStation 5 Set to Launch Next Month

This holiday season, Sony is introducing a revamped PlayStation 5 console. The new, more compact PS5 is scheduled to arrive in US stores next month, with a global release to follow in the coming months. The redesigned console will be offered in both disc and digital-only versions, similar to the original PS5. However, Sony will now provide an upgrade option for those who purchase the digital version and later wish to add disc functionality. An Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Drive, which can be installed into the system, will be available for purchase at $80 (€120, £100, ¥12,000). The revamped console boasts a 30% reduction in volume compared to its predecessor. When standing vertically, the new model is 8% shorter, 8% narrower, and 17% less deep. Despite its smaller size, the console's price remains unchanged in Europe and the UK, where prices were previously increased. In the US, the disc-equipped PS5 will retain its $500 price point, while the digital-only version will increase by $50 to $450. Japan will experience more significant price hikes due to the yen's recent struggles, with the disc-equipped system rising by another ¥12,000 ($81) and the digital-only version increasing by ¥15,000 ($101). As part of the announcement, Sony confirmed that the original PS5 models will be discontinued once current stock is depleted.
