Phantom Liberty Development Costs Exceed $60 Million
CD Projekt Red has disclosed that the development of Phantom Liberty, the latest expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, totaled over $60 million. This information was revealed during the company's Investor Day on October 5. Additionally, the Polish game developer stated that there are still $40 million in unamortized expenditures for Cyberpunk 2077's base game, which were incurred before its launch and amount to 178 million PLN. The base game itself cost $130 million to develop. Following its release on September 25, Phantom Liberty achieved sales of more than 3 million copies within two weeks. Furthermore, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 25 million units since its launch in December 2020. CD Projekt also announced that a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion, is in its conceptual phase and will be developed by CD Projekt Red's North American studio, with support from the Polish studio. The company has also begun collaborating with Anonymous Content on a live-action project, building on the success of the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime series by Studio Trigger. Initially, Cyberpunk 2077 was released in 2020 with significant technical issues, particularly on older consoles, prompting Sony to remove it from the PlayStation Store and resulting in multiple lawsuits.
