Unity CEO John Riccitiello Steps Down After Nine-Year Tenure

Following a contentious shift in its business strategy, Unity has announced the retirement of CEO and President John Riccitiello, effective immediately. Riccitiello, who has led the company since 2014, will also vacate his position as chairman of the board of directors. James M. Whitehurst has been appointed interim CEO and President, while Roelof Botha, the lead independent director, will assume the role of chairman. The board will initiate a search for a permanent CEO to succeed Riccitiello. Whitehurst expressed confidence in Unity's ability to continue enhancing its platform and driving growth, stating, "I look forward to working closely with the board and our talented global team to execute on our strategy, and I anticipate a seamless transition." During his tenure, Riccitiello was a vocal proponent of Unity's expanding operations and business model. However, not all of his initiatives were well-received, including the introduction of a Runtime Fee charge for games using the Unity engine, which sparked significant backlash from developers and prompted a revision of the policy.
