Gaming Industry Sees Over 6,000 Job Losses in 2023

The past year has witnessed significant job losses in the gaming industry, with over 6,100 positions eliminated due to layoffs and studio closures, according to recent data. Technical artist Farhan Noor has been tracking these layoffs on videogameslayoffs.com since the start of 2023. The data, which includes estimated employee numbers let go by various companies, suggests that the actual number of job losses could be even higher, as some companies have not disclosed this information. September has been identified as the worst month for layoffs, with 17 companies reducing their workforce - the highest number so far this year. Analysts, recruiters, and investors attribute the high number of redundancies to the current economic climate, including factors such as high interest rates, slowed growth, rising production costs, and increased competition. More than 80 gaming companies and media sites have been affected by layoffs, and there have been 11 studio shutdowns. Embracer Group has had the most layoffs, with seven rounds across its subsidiaries, including Crystal Dynamics, Beamdog, and Rainbow Studios. Unity has seen the highest number of employees affected, with 900 job losses, followed by Epic Games, which laid off 830 employees. Other companies, such as Amazon and Microsoft, have also seen significant job losses, with 10,000 and 21,000 employees let go, respectively. The list of affected companies includes Telltale Games, Naughty Dog, Team17, and Blizzard Entertainment, among others.
