Australia Introduces New Funding Initiatives for Game Development

The Australian government has partnered with Screen Australia to launch a series of new funding initiatives aimed at supporting game developers in the country. Unveiled during Melbourne International Games Week, these programs represent a AU$12 million commitment to the Australian games industry over the next four years. The new funding programs include the Games Production Fund, which replaces the Games Expansion Pack launched in March 2022. This flagship fund will provide financial support to game development projects at various stages, including release, Early Access launch, or the completion of a prototype. Game studios with budgets of up to AU$500,000 can receive up to AU$100,000 in funding. The first round of applications is currently open and will close on November 30. Another initiative, the Emerging Gamemakers Fund, aims to 'democratize the early stages of game development' by providing up to AU$30,000 to support innovative and artistic game prototypes from emerging creators and diverse voices. Several rounds of applications will be held until FY2026/2027, with the first round open until November 30. Additionally, Screen Australia has announced the Future Leaders Delegation, which will send Australian game developers to the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in 2024. This initiative targets early to mid-career developers who have not attended GDC before and have released at least one game. Applications are open until November 9. Since its launch in March 2022, the Games Expansion Pack has funded 62 projects with AU$8.1 million. Screen Australia's CEO, Graeme Mason, commented on the new funding initiatives, stating that they represent an evolution of the organization's games funding and will support independent game makers in the future. Mason encouraged independent game developers to share their unique visions and projects with Screen Australia and seize this opportunity.
