Jim Ryan Announces Retirement as PlayStation CEO
Sony has announced that Jim Ryan, the CEO and president of PlayStation, will be retiring by the end of the year. He will be temporarily succeeded by Hiroki Totoki, who currently serves as the President, COO, and CFO of Sony Group Corporation. Totoki is set to take on the role of SIE chairman starting next month. With a 30-year tenure at PlayStation, Ryan has been instrumental in launching several iconic consoles, including the PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5, as well as handheld devices like the PSP and PS Vita. His career at Sony began in 1994, ahead of the first PlayStation's release, and he has held various senior positions, including president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe and head of global sales and marketing. In 2019, he became the CEO and president of the PlayStation division. Ryan's decision to retire stems from the challenges of balancing his life in Europe with his work in North America. In a statement, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with exceptional people and partners, and his optimism about the future of SIE. He also thanked Yoshida-san for his trust and support. Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony's Chairman and CEO, praised Ryan's inspirational leadership, particularly during the launch of the PlayStation 5 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Yoshida acknowledged Ryan's achievements and expressed his gratitude, while also announcing the new management structure to ensure the continued success of the Game & Network Services business.
