Valve Unlikely to Release Steam Deck Successor Until 2025 or Later

According to Pierre-Loup Griffais of Valve, a follow-up to the Steam Deck is not expected to arrive until late 2025 at the earliest. In a conversation with The Verge, Griffais cited concerns that battery life may not improve sufficiently to support enhanced device performance without compromising the user experience. Valve prioritizes providing developers with a consistent performance benchmark and a straightforward message for customers, ensuring all Steam Decks can run the same games. Griffais noted, "We only consider increasing performance when there's a substantial gain to be made." He also expressed skepticism about significant advancements in battery technology within the next few years, stating, "I don't foresee such a breakthrough happening in the near future." The Verge reported that Valve had shown interest in developing a more powerful device as early as 2022.
