A recent study reveals that game composers and sound designers in North America have an average annual salary $57,000 higher than their international counterparts. The data, drawn from the GameSoundCon Game Audio Industry Survey 2023 with 602 participating professionals, shows North American game audio professionals earning $128,500 on average, while those elsewhere earn $71,300. Freelancers in North America average $81,000 for game audio work, compared to $48,200 globally. Furthermore, the report highlights a pay gap within North America, where male game audio designers earn $18,586 more on average than female and nonbinary peers. The survey's demographic breakdown indicates 75% of respondents identified as white/Caucasian, followed by 9% Hispanic/Latino, 7% Asian, and smaller percentages of other racial groups. By gender, 86% of respondents were male, 12% female, and 3% nonbinary.
