Current Investment Landscape in the Gaming Industry

The gaming industry experienced a surge in interest and investment during the pandemic, but the current market correction and global economic uncertainty have dramatically altered the environment for seeking finance. At the GamesIndustry.biz Investment Summit, a panel of experts analyzed the current investment landscape, noting that investors have become more cautious due to the tough economic environment. Anlu Liu, content manager at Kowloon Nights, observed that investors now prioritize strong organic growth and positive cash flows, and are more selective when it comes to team background and prototype funding. Hiro Capital's investment director, Joe Yuan, added that the entire ecosystem has slowed down, with investors taking longer to issue term sheets and complete transactions, and strategics being slower on M&A and reducing valuations. Matt Bilbey, a venture partner at London Venture Partners, noted that seed stage funding is still active, but later stage funding remains a significant challenge. He also mentioned that last year saw drastic changes in the type of companies and projects that received investment, with most funds now focusing on more predictable business models. The panel discussed various trends, including artificial intelligence, photogrammetry, and user-generated content, and how these may attract investors' attention. They also emphasized that the investment landscape might not improve dramatically until Q2 2024 at the earliest, and that investors will continue to be cautious, seeking out quality companies with a proven track record of profitability and sustainable growth.
