Unity Allegedly Deems Planned Parenthood and Children's Hospital as Non-Valid Charities
The developers of the indie puzzle game Orgynizer claim that Unity has classified organizations such as Planned Parenthood as 'political groups' rather than 'valid charities'. In a recent blog post, the EU-based developer LizardFactory expressed concern that the proposed fee of up to $0.20 per install would result in a loss of around 30% of the funds they have collected and donated to charity. Although Unity had clarified that charity games would be exempt from the runtime fee, the company allegedly told LizardFactory that their charitable partners, including Planned Parenthood and C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, were not considered valid charities. The game's profits are directly donated to these non-profit organizations. The developers have expressed their disappointment, stating that they created the game to support a good cause, not to generate revenue for Unity. As a result, they are considering switching to the open-source game engine Godot, but this would require recoding their entire game. The developers have strongly criticized Unity's policy, describing it as 'a mafia-style shakedown'. In response to the backlash, Unity has apologized and acknowledged the confusion surrounding the runtime fee policy, promising to announce changes to the policy soon.
