Rascal Games Secures $4.2 Million in Funding for Ambitious Multiplayer Project

Rascal Games, a newly established game development studio, has successfully raised $4.2 million in seed funding. The investment round was spearheaded by Patron, a prominent venture capital firm focused on the gaming sector, with additional contributions from key investors such as Stephen Lim, co-creator of Valorant and Raidbase, and Mitch Lasky, an early investor in Riot Games, Thatgamecompany, and Manticore Games. Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Discord's CTO and co-founder, also participated in the funding round. Furthermore, venture capital firm A16z, along with its general partner Anjney Midha, invested in Rascal Games following the studio's involvement in A16z's game accelerator program, Speedrun, earlier this year. The funds raised will be utilized to develop Project Wayward, a shared-world, group-based PvE adventure game drawing inspiration from notable titles like Sea of Thieves, Valheim, and Minecraft. Founded by Rick Ling and Jonathan Lin, the creators of the gaming app Blitz.gg, Rascal Games is poised to leverage its founders' experience in scaling Discord and building engaging gaming products from the ground up. Brian Cho, co-founder of Patron, expressed his confidence in the team, stating, "Rick and Jon bring a unique combination of experience in scaling successful gaming platforms and creating products that resonate with gamers, positioning them to pioneer innovative gaming experiences by merging generative AI capabilities with their expertise in social consumer products."
