Navigating the Challenges of Mental Health Advocacy in the Gaming Industry

The gaming industry has made significant strides in recent years in providing mental health resources to its employees. However, despite this progress, there is still much work to be done to combat stigma and promote a more supportive environment. Take This, a non-profit organization, has been at the forefront of this effort since 2012, working to provide mental health resources and support to the gaming community. In a conversation with GamesIndustry.biz, executive director Eve Crevoshay and clinical program manager Cassie Walker discuss the challenges of advocating for mental health in the industry. According to Crevoshay, the cultural conversation around mental health has shifted dramatically in recent years, driven in part by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Walker notes that despite this increased awareness, there is still a lack of understanding and support for mental health issues, particularly when it comes to addressing the root causes of distress. The duo emphasizes the importance of creating safe spaces for people to discuss their mental health and the need for a more nuanced approach to addressing the complex issues surrounding mental health. They also highlight the challenges of working with clients who may not be receptive to addressing the root causes of mental health concerns, and the importance of recognizing and addressing privilege and systemic issues. Crevoshay and Walker also discuss the importance of self-reflection and vulnerability in mental health work, and the need for a safe and supportive environment for people to learn and grow. The organization practices what it preaches, providing a space for consultants to voice concerns freely and implementing more work and materials from people of color. Maintaining their own mental health is also critical to running the organization, with a focus on setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care. Looking to the future, Take This plans to expand its staff and increase diversity, with the goal of creating a safer and more welcoming environment for all.
